Something New: Adventures in Film

Posted June 14, 2010 by Dennis Eusebio

Do you remember that feeling when you first started to design? Where everything was new, and you didn’t know what the hell you were doing? I know some people hate that feeling, but I absolutely love it.

I love that every film I work on is an experiment. Every project teaches me new things. Every project requires me to try something new.

About 8 months ago, I decided to spring for a DLSR setup so that I could start to work in film. I’ve always had a love for it, but the price of entry was always out of reach. But, when Canon released their new lines of cameras packaged with the ability to film in 1080p for under $5k, I was sold.

And so I started to dive right in. I decided to go for broke for my first project and film an interview with Debbie Millman for my good friends at design:related. Mind you, I still had no idea what I was doing at this point, but I’ve always believed in “fake it ‘till you make it”.

The video was well received and I learned countless amount of things while putting it together. Debbie provided some great content so all I had to concentrate on was working with Final Cut Pro.

After creating something that wasn’t bleedingly terrible, I decided to try and put together a video for a show my friend Chad Landenberger was putting on downtown. My good friend Varick Rosete also helped out.

While I struggled a lot with this video, I think it came out great. I experimented with a lot more shots this time around and had more than enough content to work with. It ended up making a lot of rounds online and opened up some great opportunities for me for future videos.

So that’s my experience with film thus far. I think I’m going to stick with interviews for the time being before trying out some shorts later on this year. If you’re interested in seeing more videos, visit our Vimeo page.
