Facebook Connect Challenges OpenID for Universal Login
Facebook just announced a new way for people to login and port over their data from site to site using just their Facebook logins. While this concept has been around for about 2 - 3 years now (OpenID), Facebook has hundreds of millions of users who can instantly use this new system. OpenID on the other hand, has had a hard time getting mainstream adoption and isn’t nearly as prevalent as it set out to be.
So while I love OpenID for its concept and decentralized architecture, I wonder if Facebook Connect will be the one who makes a universal login a reality for the majority of people on the web. I have both so I guess I’m set either way.

Not only are they taking on OpenID but Google’s OpenSocial (i mean, I guess they were already direct competitors). I always say social data portability coming from Facebook rather than Google though.
